Understanding the Data on DC's Young Children

COMMUNITY-LEVEL TOOL: The Early Development Instrument (EDI) is an internationally recognized tool that provides a holistic, citywide snapshot of young children's health, development, and school readiness. The EDI data gives us an important look at the way environmental factors have impacted the outcomes of DC’s young children.

EDI COLLECTION: DC’s EDI data was collected from pre-kindergarten teachers with 4-year-old students (referred to as pre-K 4) in DC Public Schools, public charter schools, and community-based organizations across the city. Learn more about the data collection process:

EDI DOMAINS: The EDI data is a holistic measure of children’s development across the city. Click here to learn more about the five domains and 16 subdomains:

EDI DATA & MAPS: The EDI allows us to observe strengths and inequities across the city. Outcomes are also geocoded to where children live, giving residents a strong sense of place by showing neighborhood-level results. Explore citywide trends and view the EDI maps, including a new ward-level look at the District’s children:

When you imagine what you hope for children across DC, do you have questions about where children need more support? Check out the maps for ideas on answering this question.
